To begin with, you should research what type of flyer you are going to be. There is different information available for each type of drone operator. It could be for the type of drone operator you are wanting to be you may not need a certification.   1. Recreational Flyer or Community Based Organization
  2. Certified Remote Pilot or Commercial Operator
  3. Public Safety or Government User
  4. Educational User

Are you ready to start your commercial drone business?

Ok so now you have researched all of the current categories of drone flying according to the FAA and you are now ready to start. Becoming a certified commercial drone operator is broken down by the FAA into 3 easy to follow steps.

Step 1 Learn the rules.

It’s a good idea to get familiar with the drone flight rules such as when you can fly a drone, where to fly your drone, how to fly your drone, how far you can fly etc. This will help prevent any accidents that could cause harm to yourself, someone’s property, or people. https://www.faa.gov/uas/getting_started/

Step 2 Become FAA Commercial Pilot Certified

To become an FAA Certified Commercial Drone Pilot you have to pass the knowledge test. To be eligible you must be:

  1. at least 16 years of age
  2. be able to speak, read and write English
  3. in good mental and physical condition

You will need to obtain an FAA tracking number FTN, prior to scheduling the knowledge test. To obtain your FTN you will need to go to the IACRA site and create a profile. You can follow this link here, https://iacra.faa.gov/IACRA/Default.aspx

After studying and obtaining an FTN you will need to then schedule an appointment to take your test. All testing is done at FAA-approved testing centers done by PSI Exams and the current price for the knowledge exam as of 2021 is $175 USD. After passing the exam you will need then to complete form 8710-13 and follow all of the specific steps to obtain your certificate. To complete this form you will need to use the profile you previously created on the IACRA website. This process has many additional steps including verifying your identity. Once you have passed the test and followed the steps for your certification your permanent Remote Pilot Certificate will be sent to you in the mail.

Step 3 Register your Drone

Registration with the FAA is $5 for each drone, you will need to provide the make and model of your drone and registration is valid for 3 years. Registrations can be done online or by mail, however, online registration is limited to 55lbs. All other registration must be done by mail.
